Svetlana Struggles to Make It to the Clinic

Sarah Mitchell shuffled into the clinic, her ankle twisted badly from a sudden stumble. She could barely keep weight on it. A bald man darted past her, slipping right to the front of the queue and disappearing into the doctors office. Exhausted, Sarah sank onto the waitingroom chair and muttered under her breath, Typical mennever letting anyone cut in line! A woman nearby overheard and replied, Hes been here all morning, trying to get a prosthetic fitted. Hes in a hurry, thats why hes pushing ahead. She laughed, Thats our neighbour, Andrew Clarke. Hes a good bloke, but life hasnt been kind to himlost his leg, his wife left him. Thought hed drown his sorrows, but look at him now, hopping along on one leg like a spry youngster. No children, no close family. At that moment Andrew, slightly limping, emerged from the consultation with a grin. He winked at Sarah and the woman and said, Whats the plan, ladies? Lets make the most of the day! before stomping out.

Sarah smirked at the word ladies. It no longer applied to her. Shed married young, her husband twelve years her senior. Both were born under the sign of the Dog, according to their horoscopes, and Paul Harper was a keen dog lover. Soon they owned a Labrador named Gizmo, and Sarah became pregnant. Friends gushed, You have the perfect lifeflat in London, a decent car, a country cottage, a dog, and a baby on the way. At six months, however, Sarah suffered a miscarriage and lost the baby theyd hoped for. Paul tried to comfort her, then said, Were not as young as we used to be, but we still have Gizmo. Sarah adored the dog and Paul entered him in shows, yet she wondered whether a pet could ever fill the void left by a child.

At a dog show, Paul met Olivia Reed, who also owned a Labrador. Olivia soon told Sarah bluntly, Paul and I are expecting a child. Im younger, Ill have a healthy baby. She added, Youre getting on in years, Sarah. In truth Olivia was almost twenty years younger than Paul, and the judge of fate seemed to favor her. Sarah began to feel her own age pressing down, as if life had sped past her in a flash. Retirement will be here soon, Paul warned, as though he were talking about himself too.

One week later, after her ankle had almost healed, Sarah returned to the clinic and ran into the same bald man again. Excuse me, miss, please go ahead of me. I cut in earlier, he said apologetically, flashing a smile. When Sarah left the doctors room, the man lingered by the doorway.

Next! called the nurse.

Your turn, the man announced, not heading inside. Im Andrew, and you are Sarah? I guessed it straight away. A pretty, brighteyed girl like you must have a name as lovely as her smile. May I escort you a bit?

Sarah chuckled, If Im the pretty one, you hardly look like a fellow patient.

Andrew led her to a small café nearby, Cheap and tasty, my treat. I havent had breakfast yet. Their conversation flowed easily, and Andrew soon asked to see her again, which Sarah gladly accepted.

One afternoon, Andrew confessed, Im afraid someone will overtake me on the road and Ill be left standing there again. Im lame, bald, and youre a beautiful young woman. He paused, then said, Sarah, marry me. Dont worry we barely know each other; I want to spend the rest of my life getting to know you. I have a flat, a steady job, and Im strong enough to provide. He looked at her expectantly, then lowered his head, sensing her hesitation. Everyone wants a healthy, wealthy partner these days, not a cripple.

Sarah laughed, Youre impossible, Andrew, but Ill say yes.

Soon after the wedding, Sarah discovered she was pregnant. She never imagined she could have a child; she had placed a cross on her own heart years ago. Yet joy burst forth, and she felt as though time had turned back, restoring her youth, beauty, and love.

Look at our little Tom, with his curly hair! she cooed.

Andrew ran his hand over his smooth bald scalp, I used to be a blond, carefree lad. Now Im a bit limping, but weve got a son with your eyes and my hair. Isnt that something?

Sarah pressed her shoulder to his, I cant stop staring at Tom. It feels surreal that were parents. If we hadnt met that day, none of this would exist. Tears welled up, and she began to sob. Andrew, taken aback, tried to comfort her, Dont cry, love. Look at our boyhe had to be here. Id have been lost without you.

Sarah wiped her tears, Im crying from happiness. This is the first time Ive ever wept because Im truly glad. A sparkle of tears lingered on her lashes like tiny diamonds. She felt rich and fulfilled.

In the end, Sarah realized that wealth isnt measured in money, flats or cars, but in the love that builds a family, however unexpected. The greatest treasure is the simple, shared moments that turn strangers into lifelong companions.
