Marrying Sarah felt like a waking nightmare. She was demanding, loud, but my dad had picked her for me. He spotted his mates daughter and decided wed be perfect together. Since I didnt have another girl in my life and was already thirty, I had to go through with it. Sarah ran everything in our marriageher plans, her rules. First came one child, then another, just like shed mapped out.
Life rolled on, full of struggles and setbacks. There were so many awful moments it felt like living in hell. I hated my wife, resented my kids, and fell out badly with my father-in-law. I never thought Id make it through without splitting up.
Mum always had my back, but both she and Dad kept telling me to just wait it out, stay patient. It was like they knew something, having lived so long, and were sure Id figure it out when I got older too.
Well, the kids grew up and moved on. Im still with Sarahweve grown used to each other, found our rhythm, and now I cant imagine life without her. Moneys stable enough, and weve got this quiet happiness that makes everything feel like a fairytale. Were healthy, content, in love, with no real worries. Everythings as good as it gets. For ages now, theres been nothing to complain about. Sometimes I sit with Mum and Dad and laugh about ithow wrong I was, how scared. They just smile and say, Love isnt always fireworks. Sometimes its just showing up, every day, until one morning you wake up and realize its been there all along. I never thought Id say this, but Im glad I waited.
